London

If you’ve never chased the sun across the Thames from a rooftop, you’re missing a classic London ritual. Picture a golden hour, the city’s skyline glinting, and a glass of something sparkling in your hand. That’s what you’ll get when you step into one of the city’s top terrace spots. Below, I break down the best places to watch the sunset, with concrete details you can use right now.

1. Sky Garden – A Public Oasis

Located at 20 Fenchurch Street, the Sky Garden offers free access after booking a slot. The panoramic terrace spans 1,000 square metres and features a 35‑metre-high glass wall that frames the skyline. The best time? Between 5:15 p.m. and 6:30 p.m., when the sun dips just below the City’s high‑rises. The venue hosts a rotating selection of craft cocktails, but the highlight is their signature “Garden Gimlet,” made with gin, lime, and a hint of elderflower.

2. The Shard’s 52 – Height Meets Heat

At 52 The Shard, the bar sits on the 52nd floor, offering a 360‑degree view of London’s rooftops. A reservation guarantees a table by the balcony, which is 12 m above street level. The menu is lean: a small plate of smoked salmon, a trio of mini sliders, and the bar’s own “Shardsky” gin‑based cocktail. If you arrive at 5:45 p.m., you’ll catch the sky turning from amber to deep orange before the city lights flicker on.

3. Madison – A Modern Twist

Madison on South Bank sits on the 15th floor of a 19‑story building. Its terrace is a 600‑square‑metre slab of glass and steel, perfect for a sunset photo. The bar’s signature drink is the “London Fog,” a mezcal‑based cocktail with a smoky twist. The venue opens its terrace at 5:30 p.m. for sunset, and a free welcome drink is offered to guests arriving before 6:00 p.m.

4. The Roof – A Classic London Pub Upgrade

On the roof of The Old Vic Theatre, The Roof blends historic charm with modern design. The terrace covers 400 square metres and is lined with vintage London posters. The bar’s “Theatre Tonic” is a gin‑based drink with a splash of elderflower liqueur. The best sunset window is the west-facing balcony, which offers a view of the Thames and the city’s west side. Arrive by 5:0 p.m. to secure a spot before the crowd.

5. The London Eye’s Sky Deck – A Unique Perspective

While the London Eye is a popular tourist attraction, its Sky Deck offers a rare rooftop bar experience. The bar sits on the 120‑metre‑high gondola, providing a 360‑degree view of the city. The menu focuses on small plates and craft beers, with a standout “Eye‑tini” made from gin, cucumber, and a dash of lime. The deck opens at 4:45 p.m., and the sunset is visible from the western side of the wheel.

Choosing the Right Time and Booking Tips

Sunset times shift throughout the year. In late summer, the sun sets around 9:30 p.m.; in winter, it’s closer to 4:15 p.m. Check the local weather forecast and book your spot at least 48 hours in advance, especially for popular venues like Sky Garden and The Shard. Most rooftops require a minimum spend of £30 per person for the terrace, though some offer free entry with a drink purchase.

What to Bring for the Perfect Sunset Night

• A lightweight jacket – temperatures can drop 5 °C after sunset.
• A small camera or phone with a tripod – the skyline is a photographer’s dream.
• Comfortable shoes – you’ll be standing for 60–90 minutes.
• Pre‑ordered drinks – many rooftops have a limited menu.
